Sporting CP, founded in 1906, remain one of Portugal’s major clubs, based at the Estádio José Alvalade and currently sitting second in Liga Portugal. Their squad is valued at around £396m by Transfermarkt, with 46 players and an average age of 23.
Their domestic campaign has carried real weight without being flawless. Recent league form shows three straight wins – 3-0 against Gil Vicente, 4-1 at Rio Ave and 5-1 against Vitoria SC – after draws with Tondela and AVS and a 2-1 home defeat to Benfica.
Sporting’s numbers are clean enough to command attention. At home they average three goals scored and just 0.6 conceded per match, a combination that points to both control and cutting edge. Away from Lisbon they still carry a decent threat, averaging 2.2 goals while conceding 0.8.
Luis Suárez has been the main finisher with 33 goals, well clear of Pedro Gonçalves on 14 and Trincão on 11. Maximiliano Araújo and Geny Catamo have also added seven each, giving Sporting a spread of contributors rather than a one-man attack.
They have also been involved beyond the league, reaching the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira final and the Champions League quarter-finals. For Celtic supporters, Sporting profile as a technically strong, high-scoring Portuguese side with enough defensive order to make them more than a simple attacking proposition.
