FC Midtjylland are a relatively modern Danish force, founded in 1999 and based at the MCH Arena. Their rise has been built on sharp recruitment and a clear competitive edge, which has made them a familiar name beyond Denmark as well as a regular reference point for clubs watching the Scandinavian market.
This season they sit second in the Superliga, with a 32-man squad averaging 24 years of age. They have also reached the DBU Pokalen final, came through Europa League qualifying to the play-offs, and went as far as the last 16 in the Europa League.
Their numbers point to a side with real attacking weight. At home they average 2.7 goals scored and 1.5 conceded per match, while away from home they still carry threat, scoring 1.8 and conceding 0.8 on average. Franculino Djú leads the scoring with 22 goals, supported by Júnior Brumado on 16, Aral Şimşir on 12, Valdemar Byskov on nine and Darío Osorio on eight.
Recent league form has been mixed rather than poor: a 2-3 home defeat to Brondby followed draws with FC Nordsjaelland, Viborg and AGF Aarhus, after wins over Sonderjyske and AGF Aarhus. They have struck first inside 20 minutes in five of 16 league matches, so Celtic would be looking at an opponent capable of starting quickly and carrying a sustained goal threat.
Midtjylland are established, competitive and still firmly placed near the top end of Danish football. For Celtic supporters, they are best viewed as a well-organised European-standard opponent rather than an unknown quantity.
