Erik Sviatchenko, stapled defender and known to don the number 28 jersey, was born in Denmark on 4th October 1991, making him a mature 34 years of age. He currently plies his trade in an American outfit, Houston Dynamo, renowned for his central defending. Sviatchenko stands tall, literally and figuratively, at 6ft (1.84m) and weighs in at approximately 12st 12lb (82kg).
Valued around £680k — according to information taken from Transfermarkt — he has a contract with his current club Houston Dynamo that is poised to run out at the end of 2026. He originally joined FC Midtjylland as a fresh out of the box trainee back in July 2006.
His career truly began to kick off in season 2008 - 2009, when he made his first appearance for FC Midtjylland. Over the years, his contributions to the club included not only a number of appearances but also a fair share of goals. These achievements left a mark in his home country before a significant transfer took place in his career.
Indeed, January 2016 saw Sviatchenko swapping FC Midtjylland for Celtic in Scotland's Premiership for a reasonable fee of around £1.5m. As a former Celtic player, Sviatchenko's time in the Hoops was significant. In his debut 2015 - 2016 season at Celtic, Sviatchenko was a regular fixture in the first team, making 14 league appearances. This trend continued in the 2016 - 2017 season where he made 28 appearances and even got his name on the score sheet.
As fate had it, after two fulfilling seasons securing the defence at Parkhead, Sviatchenko returned, albeit on loan, to his former club FC Midtjylland in January 2018. This move was later made permanent in July 2018 for an estimated fee of £1m. Sviatchenko's second stint at the Danish club saw him consistently making significant first-team contributions.
Fast forward to March 2023, Sviatchenko embarked on a fresh venture with Houston Dynamo in the USA for a recorded transfer fee of about £1.3m. During his time with the club, he has been a landmark defensive presence, continuing to tally up first-team appearances — 17 in his 2023 debut season alone. His commitment extended beyond appearances, finding the net in the 2024 season.
Looking ahead, the 2026 season is forecasted to see Sviatchenko once again anchoring the defence at Houston Dynamo in the USA, a telltale sign of his enduring career.
