Born on 30 May 1994, Vasilis Barkas is a Dutch goalkeeper currently plying his trade at FC Utrecht. The towering figure, standing at a height of 6ft 5in (1.96m), weighs in at approximately 13st 5lb (85kg). The No.1 on the team sheet, Barkas's current market value is pegged at the region of £3m, according to the latest figures from Transfermarkt.
Barkas's professional journey started in July 2006, when he joined Greek Super League side, Atromitos, as a trainee. He made his debut in the 2015-2016 season, making 12 appearances for the club. The following season, he transferred to AEK Athens for a fee of approximately £450k, where he went on to make a total of 79 league appearances over four seasons.
In July 2020, Barkas made a significant move to Scottish Premiership club, Celtic, for a noteworthy fee of about £5m. During the 2020-2021 season, he featured 15 times for the Hoops. However, his opportunities diminished the following season, making only a single appearance.
The Dutch goalkeeper's time at Celtic Park was marked by a lack of consistency between the sticks. Despite showing glimpses of his commanding presence and agility, Barkas could never fully establish himself as the undoubted first choice. This inevitably led to his move away from the Scottish champions in July 2022, joining FC Utrecht on loan.
In his time at FC Utrecht, Barkas would find more consistent game time. Across three seasons following his transfer, he pulled on the goalkeeper's jersey 92 times in the Eredivisie. He has continued in similar vein this season, having made three starts thus far.
In addition to his domestic accomplishments, Barkas enhanced his portfolio with international exploits, featuring in the Europa League Qualifiers 2025-2026 and the recent KNVB Beker 2024-2025 cup competition.
In July 2023, Barkas's loan spell at Utrecht was made permanent, concluding his stint at Celtic. He would then go on to feature consistently for Utrecht, lending his experience and abilities to the Dutch ensemble.
