Our good friend Vaclav Cerny, hailing from Czech Republic, born 17th October 1997, is curiously employed as a forward, typically fluttering about on the right wing for Rangers. He towers at the somewhat deficient height of 5ft 10in (1.78m) and skates across the pitch at a weight of 10st 9lb (68kg). Which is amusing given the military-like implications of the number 18 he has strapped to his jersey's back. In the realm of international football, he seems to have sneaked into the Czech Republic national team.
Cerny's walloping current market value rounds off to a cosy £7.7m, a fun fact I acquired while snooping around Transfermarkt. Boredom looms ahead as his contract with Rangers winds down, set to expire on 30th June 2025.
The lad's triumphant exit from the National Football League in Czech Republic saw him hopping aboard a flight to Ajax in Eredivisie, Netherlands, the trip setting him back a modest £650k back in January 2014. Flash forward to a rather lacklustre period between 2015 and 2018, where he hovered around the first team with combined appearances totalling 16, and one ideal opportunity to souvenir the match ball.
July 2019 brought another shift for Cerny, as he decided to swap Ajax for FC Utrecht, a move which cost him around £680k. His tally of appearances wobbled lower to 13 for season 2019 - 2020. Seemingly not satisfied, Cerny found himself shipped off to FC Twente on loan the following July.
A permanent move to FC Twente was eventually nailed down in July 2021 for £860k. His appearances and goal tally started to look healthier, with 66 appearances and 20 goals over three seasons. Presumably tired of Dutch cheese and windmills, Cerny uprooted again to Wolfsburg in Bundesliga, Germany in July 2023, for a relatively staggering £7.7m.
A year later, Scotland appeared on his radar as he launched himself into a loan to Rangers in July 2024. His current season has seen him bag 11 goals from 30 appearances. Besides the rather busy club football career, his globe-trotting exploits have seen him partake in several major tournaments, notably, the Euro and World Cup Qualifiers, the Nations League and the Europa League with varying degrees of success.
