Vaclav Cerny, 27 years of age, of Czech origin, is a nimble right winger for Rangers, standing at an unassuming 5ft 10in (1.78m) and weighing in at a rather featherweight 10st 9lb (68kg). Of course, he proudly wears the number 18 jersey, an emblem synonymous with such celebrated figures as Paul Scholes and Ashley Young, to name but a couple of English luminaries.
The chap allegedly commands a modern-day market value of approximately £7.5million, or so Transfermarkt would suggest. His current agreement with Rangers is precariously perched on its final two months, not unlike a doomed clay pigeon, set to be abruptly concluded on the 30th of June, 2025.
Young Vaclav, in the not so distant past of January 2014, was unceremoniously plucked from the quasi-obscurity of 1. FK Příbram, of the National Football League in Czech Republic, by Ajax, for a paltry sum of £650k. His subsequent years at Ajax saw the lad accumulate roughly the same number of appearances as a modern burglar would toes, seventeen to be exact, while notching up one goal in the process.
Upon parting ways with Ajax, Cerny trundled over to FC Utrecht for the semi-respectable sum of £680k. A stint of loaned purgatory from FC Utrecht to FC Twente came to pass, before a full transfer to FC Twente for around £860k. At Twente, the lad made strides, playing a whopping 96 league matches and netting the ball twenty times over the span of four seasons.
In a surprise twist that left the world positively unfazed, Cerny was sold to Wolfsburg for a far from meagre price of £7.7m. A year in Germany must've been more than enough for our plucky lad, as he found himself shipped off to Rangers on loan. Proving his mettle in the 2024 - 2025 season for Rangers, Cerny amassed a tally of 12 goals in 33 league appearances.
Inhabitantly residing in various competitions, he dabbled in the League Cup and Scottish Cup with Rangers, Euro 2024 with his national Czech Rep. side, even the Champions League Qualifiers and Europa League with Rangers, scoring a total of ten goals across those tournaments. Quite the globetrotter, indeed. But lest we forget, amidst all these footy antics, the boy's got a contract about to vanish faster than my patience for his interminable list of league appearances and competitions.
