Stephen Welsh, born in Coatbridge on 19 January 2000 (age 26), is a Scotland centre-half whose senior career has been shaped above all by Celtic. A commanding 6ft 3in (1.91m) defender, he had an early spell at Greenock Morton that gave him senior football before his return to Celtic in January 2020.
Welsh was never presented as a glamour project, which was probably just as well. He worked his way into the first-team picture at Celtic as a squad defender, making 43 league appearances and scoring two league goals across seven seasons. His most productive league campaign came in 2020-2021, when he played 16 times and scored once.
His Celtic years brought a substantial haul: six Premiership titles, three League Cups and two Scottish Cups. He was not always central to those successes, but he remained part of successful squads over a long stretch, which is not nothing at a club where patience with developing defenders can be in short supply.
Welsh left Celtic in July 2026 for Swansea City, bringing an end to the spell that had defined his career to that point. His market value is around £1.5m, according to Transfermarkt.
His career so far is a plain one to read: developed around Celtic, hardened a little by early senior football, used as a reliable squad centre-half, and then moved on to Swansea for the next stage.
