Seán Maguire, born on 1 May 1994, is an English-born footballer who primarily serves as a striker for Cork City. Standing at 5ft 8in (1.75m) and weighing 11st 11lb (75kg), Maguire exhibits a physical presence on the pitch that matches his striking abilities.
Maguire's professional career started in January 2013, when he transferred from Waterford, a team from the Rep. Ireland's Premier Division, to West Ham United in England's Premier League. The fee for this transfer remains undisclosed. Just over a year later, in February 2014, Maguire went on loan to Sligo Rovers, also in the Rep. Ireland's Premier Division. He made 18 appearances for them in his debut season and scored a single goal.
In September of the same year, he was back in England, this time on loan to Accrington Stanley in League Two. It was a prolific season for Maguire, as he found the back of the net seven times in 33 games. In July 2015, he returned to the Rep. Ireland, transferring from West Ham United to Dundalk in the First Division. His stint at Dundalk was short-lived, only appearing six times in league matches before moving to Cork City in the Premier Division in January 2016.
This move proved to be a turning point in Maguire's career. His goal-scoring ability came to the fore, as he hit 18 goals in 30 appearances in the 2016 season, followed by a remarkable haul of 20 goals in just 21 appearances in the 2017 season.
His performances caught the attention of Preston North End in the English Championship, leading to a transfer in July 2017 for another undisclosed fee. He stayed for five and a half seasons, making a total of 159 appearances and scoring 22 goals. Despite a less prolific record, his consistency earned him a move to Coventry City, also in the Championship, in January 2023. After a brief spell at Coventry City and subsequently Carlisle United in the National League, Maguire returned to Cork City in August 2024.
As for the future, records show that Maguire will still be playing for Cork City in the 2025 season. This committed athlete genuinely exemplifies the phrase 'Wherever you go, there you are.'
