Born on 22 October 1995 in Switzerland, Saidy Janko is a tenacious right back commanding the pitch for Young Boys Bern. Standing at 5ft 11in (1.81m) and weighing a considerable 13st (83kg), he sports the number 17 whilst on the field. Though born in Switzerland, he also plies his trade on the international stage, representing the Gambia national team. Transfermarkt reports his current market value standing at a respectable £445k.
Janko initially set his foot on the professional football stage in July 2013, transferring from FC Zurich in Switzerland to Manchester United, commanding a fee of approximately £700k. Two years later, in February 2015, he was sent to Bolton Wanderers on loan, where he made a considerable impression in his debut season, gaining ten first team appearances and even netting a goal.
In July 2015, Janko made the move north to Celtic, costing the Glasgow-based club the same fee Manchester United had initially paid for him two years earlier. He was a relatively regular fixture in his initial season 2015-2016 campaign, making ten first team appearances. During the subsequent 2016-2017 season, his presence was notably reduced, only making two appearances. On a temporary basis, Janko switched Celtic Park for Barnsley's Oakwell come August 2016. During that season, he was regularly featured at the League One outfit, playing in 14 matches and scoring one goal.
Leaving the British Isles behind him, Janko was signed by French outfit Saint-Etienne in July 2017, in a transfer with an undisclosed fee. He quickly established himself in the squad, making 21 first team appearances over the course of the 2017-2018 season. One year later, he was snapped up by Porto for an impressive £2.7m. However, his time in Portugal was short-lived, and he was soon loaned out to Nottingham Forest in England. After a single season with the midland's team, Janko was loaned again, this time returning to his homeland with Young Boys Bern.
In a strange turn of events, Janko was sold by Porto to Real Valladolid in October 2020, despite already being on loan at Young Boys Bern. After two moderately successful seasons in Spain, he was loaned to Bochum in the Bundesliga. One year later, Janko was sold by Valladolid to Young Boys Bern for an undisclosed fee.
Janko's record with his current club is strong. In the 2019-2020 season, he made 33 first team appearances, followed by 30 in the 2023-2024 season. Curiously, he has yet to make a league appearance in the current season. Despite this, Janko has left his mark on the international stage, appearing in four Champions League matches and one World Cup Qualification match for Gambia.
