The Scotsman began his career with Hibernian, a top-flight club in Scotland's Premiership. During July 2016, he was loaned to Edinburgh City, a League Two club in Scotland. Following his spell at Edinburgh, Porteous returned to Hibernian in July 2017. Over subsequent seasons, he consistently proved his worth. Between 2017 and 2023, he made a total of 120 first team appearances and scored 11 goals in league matches for Hibernian, evidencing his reliability on the pitch.
January 2023 saw Porteous make a pivotal career transfer. Moving from Hibernian to Watford, an English Championship club, Porteous was sold for around £500k. At Watford, between 2022 and 2025, he made 76 first team appearances where he scored 6 goals in league matches.
In what can be considered a strategic move, Porteous moved from Watford to fellow Championship club, Preston North End in February 2025 under a loan agreement. In the 2024-2025 season, Porteous quickly made an impact, scoring one goal in 11 first team appearances.
Beyond club commitments, Porteous has proudly represented Scotland in both Euro 2024 and the Nations League 2024-2025.
