Philip Otele

Philip Otele was a regular starter for Basel in the 2025-26 Super League, making 20 appearances including 17 starts and scoring five goals. For a right winger, that return pointed to a useful but not dominant attacking role – he was trusted from the start most weeks and added end product without carrying the scoring load. His seven Europa League appearances and two goals also showed he was part of Basel’s European plans.

Otele’s career path has been one of steady movement rather than early establishment at a single club. He went from UTA Arad to CFR Cluj, then to Al-Wahda, Basel and Hamburg, giving him experience across Romania, the UAE, Switzerland and Germany. At 27, the profile is that of a late-developing wide forward whose market has strengthened through productive spells rather than a straight academy-to-elite route.

The transfer record shows clear upward financial movement. CFR Cluj picked Otele up from UTA Arad on a free transfer in 2023, then sold him to Al-Wahda for €3.0m a year later. Basel first took him on loan in January 2025 before paying €2.7m that summer, and the later loan to Hamburg suggested he remained a player with value in stronger European markets.
