Paulo Bernardo Gonçalves Bernardo, more commonly known as Paulo Bernardo, first drew in his footballing breath on the 24th day of January 2002 in sunny Portugal. This central midfielder, standing at a handy 5ft 10in (1.8m) and a sturdy 12st 1lb (77kg), currently exercises his talent on the pristine fields of Celtic Football Club. Bernardo sports the number 28 jersey for Celtic and has valorously represented Portugal at the U21 level.
As of current reckoning, the young midfielder's market value is estimated to be around £3.4m, a figure sourced from Transfermarkt.
In July of 2010, Bernardo started his career as a trainee with the prestigious Portuguese club, Benfica. His debut season 2021 - 2022 saw him making 17 appearances for the first team in league matches. In January 2023, Bernardo switched allegiances to Paços de Ferreira, also in Portugal, although this was only on a loan agreement. Climbing the rungs steadily, he was seen on the field in a 13 league matches for the Paços side, even contributing a pair of goals to their campaign.
September of 2023 marked a significant stepping stone in Bernardo's career as he vaulted from Portugal to Scotland, making his way to Celtic, initially on loan. He swiftly grew into his roles in the 2023 - 2024 and 2024 - 2025 seasons at the club, becoming a dependable presence by making 22 and 28 first team appearances and notching up three and two goals respectively. His performance has shown great promise in the current 2025 - 2026 season as well, making eight appearances so far.
In August of 2024, Celtic wisely seized the opportunity to bring the young talent into their ranks on a permanent deal for a sum of around £3.5m. Bernardo quickly repaid their faith by becoming a constant name in team sheets over the subsequent seasons. His involvement for the club extended to the League Cup 2025 - 2026 where he made two appearances off the bench, and the Scottish Cup 2025 - 2026, starting twice and being substituted in another. Also worthy of note are his impressive contributions on an international stage - he made four starts for Portugal U21 in the UEFA U21 Qualifiers 2025, even managing to slip a goal past his opposing keepers. For Celtic, he also made two starts and five substitute appearances in the Europa League 2025 - 2026 campaign.
