Atkinson joined Melbourne City in the A-League in Australia as a trainee in July 2017. During his debut season, 2017-2018, he made 15 first team appearances in league matches. Successively in 2018-2019 and 2019-2020, his involvement grew, leading to him making 17 and 21 first team appearances respectively. He also scored his first goal in the latter season. However, his appearances dipped in the 2020-2021 season to 12, but he managed to score a goal. In a career shift, Atkinson transferred from Melbourne City to Hearts in the Premiership in Scotland in January 2022, for an undisclosed fee. Having moved halfway across the world, he adjusted well to the new league, making 15 first team appearances and scoring a goal in his first season (2021-2022). In the following 2022-2023 season, he partook in 18 first team matches, once again scoring a goal. By the 2023-2024 season, he made 19 first team appearances.
In a surprise move in September 2024, Atkinson retraced his steps back to Melbourne City in the A-League in Australia, leaving Hearts after an enriching experience. His current record at Melbourne City post his return seems to mirror his initial seasons at the club.
