Matthew Connelly, born on 2 March 2003 in Scotland, is currently a goalkeeper for Premier League side Motherwell. Standing at 5ft 10in (1.8m) tall and tipping the scales at 11st (70kg), Connelly commands his box with an air of maturity beyond his 23 years. He proudly dons the jersey adorned with the number 31.
As per data from Transfermarkt, Connelly's current market value stands at a modest £42k.
His career trajectory has been decidedly nomadic, characterised by a plethora of loans within the Scottish Leagues. October 2020 saw him move on loan from Motherwell to Falkirk, only to return to his parent side in January 2021 after a brief spell in the Premiership.
Subsequently, in July 2021 he transferred on loan to Gretna in the Lowland League, returning to Motherwell in October of the same year. Yet again, in current season 2025 - 2026, it's evident that Connelly has struggled to establish himself in Motherwell's first team, failing to make a single appearance in league matches.
Continuing this vein of short-term loan agreements, Connelly moved on loan to Stranraer in League Two, Scotland in January 2023, where he managed a modest tally of five first team appearances. He was subsequently recalled by Motherwell in June 2023.
December 2023 saw another loan spell, this time to East Kilbride, again in League Two, from which he returned to Motherwell in June of the following year. August 2024 brought about yet another loan to East Kilbride, only to return the subsequent season. However, frustratingly, he has yet made no league appearances for Motherwell in the 2025 - 2026 season.
August 2025 brought a change in scenery as Connelly moved on loan to Airdrieonians in the Scottish Championship, where he made a respectable 11 first team appearances before returning to Motherwell in October 2025. Yet, in the current 2025 - 2026 season, Connelly has yet to make a mark with a run in the Motherwell first-team in league matches.
Nevertheless, Connelly has garnered some competitive experience at Motherwell this season, having started twice each in the League Cup and the Scottish Cup. It remains to be seen whether these outings will aid his cause in securing a more substantial role in the first team in the future.
