Matthew Connelly, born the 2nd of March 2003 in Scotland, presently serves as a goalkeeper for Motherwell. Standing at 5 feet 10 inches (1.8 meters) tall and weighing 11 stone (70 kilograms), Connelly cuts a rather formidable figure in front of the goalpost. The lad is often seen sporting the number 31 jersey.
His current contract with Motherwell, with only 4 months left, is due to expire on the 31st of May, 2025.
In a rather eventful turn of events, Connelly was transferred from Motherwell in the Premiership to the Championship side Falkirk on a loan deal, back in October 2020. Unfortunately, as of the current 2024-2025 season, he hasn't managed to notch up any first-team appearances in league matches for Motherwell.
Upon the completion of his loan at Falkirk, the talented Scot returned to his home ground in January 2021, only to be shipped off on another loan spell to Gretna, a side competing in the Lowland League, a few months later in July. He returned from his stint at Gretna in October the same year, yet his luck did not seem to change as Connelly, once again, failed to break into the first-team at Motherwell.
Connelly's nomadic escapades did not slow down as he was loaned out to Stranraer in the Scottish League Two, in January 2023. Here, the lad was able to make some impact, marking his debut season (2022-2023) with five first-team appearances in league matches. Nevertheless, by June 2023, he was shipped back to Motherwell.
The ever-shifting sands of Connelly’s football journey saw him in December 2023, transferred from Motherwell to East Kilbride in the Lowland League in Scotland on loan, only to return by June 2024.
The wheel kept spinning for Connelly as another loan spell ensued at East Kilbride in August 2024, only for him to return to Motherwell in November 2024. Alas, even in the current 2024-2025 season, Connelly has been unable to make his mark in the first team for league matches at Motherwell.
That wraps up the quite dizzying career of Matthew Connelly thus far. Nonetheless, it’s apparent that in spite of changing tides, the lad's got his gloves fastened and his spirits unflagging.
