Liam Scales was born on 8 August 1998 (age 27) in Ireland and came through a route that was not especially gilded. A 6ft 2in (1.88m), 13st 5lb (85kg) left-sided central defender, he developed with UCD before moving on to Shamrock Rovers, where he did enough to earn Celtic’s attention.
Celtic signed Scales from Shamrock Rovers in August 2021. His first spell in the side was limited, and in July 2022 he moved to Aberdeen, a spell that gave him the sort of regular Scottish Premiership football defenders generally need before anyone is entirely sure what they are. It was not glamorous, but it was useful.
Scales returned to Celtic with more football behind him and gradually became a more dependable part of the first-team picture. Wearing squad number 5, he has been used primarily as a central defender, and his most productive league season came in 2024 - 2025, when he scored twice in 26 appearances.
He remains part of the current Celtic side and, in 2025 - 2026, has made 33 league appearances without scoring. His market value is around £4.5m, according to Transfermarkt.
Scales’ career has been shaped by steady progression rather than noise: UCD, Shamrock Rovers, Celtic, a useful Aberdeen spell, and then a more established place back at Celtic. He is still relevant in the present side, which is no small thing for a player whose case has been built mostly through patience and games.
