Neilson's professional journey began in July 2018 when he joined Dundee United in the Premiership in Scotland as a trainee. He proved his mettle in his debut season (2020 - 2021) by securing nine appearances in first-team league matches. Shaking things up in March 2021, Neilson transferred from Dundee United to Falkirk in the Premiership in Scotland on loan. His efforts at Falkirk during the 2025 - 2026 season have thus far rewarded him with seven first team appearances in league matches.
In June 2021, Neilson returned to Dundee United on completion of his loan. His homecoming season saw him make nine appearances in first-team league matches, a feat he repeated in the 2021 - 2022 season with six more bouts.
Come July 2022, Neilson made yet another move. This time, he transferred from Dundee United to Hearts, another Premiership side in Scotland. Between the 2022 - 2023 and 2024 - 2025 seasons at Hearts, Neilson would end up making a total of 15 first team appearances in league matches.
However, in August 2023, Neilson was transferred from Hearts to Partick Thistle in the Championship in Scotland on loan. His time at Partick Thistle proved fruitful, boasting 36 first-team appearances and scoring his first career goal in league matches during the 2023 - 2024 season.
In June 2024, Neilson once again saw his loan completed and returned from Partick Thistle to Hearts. His return to Hearts saw a further 15 appearances over two seasons in first-team league matches.
In a similar fashion to his previous loan, Neilson, in July 2024, was transferred from Hearts to St Johnstone in the Championship in Scotland on loan. During the 2024 - 2025 season, he made 17 first team appearances in league matches.
In January 2025, Neilson's loan spell at St Johnstone concluded, and he returned to Hearts. Despite his return, he left again on loan in July 2025, this time to Falkirk, where he has since made seven first-team appearances in the 2025 - 2026 season.
In addition to his league contributions, Neilson has also participated in the League Cup 2025 - 2026 for Falkirk, securing five starts in the competition.
