Lewis Mayo, a robust specimen born on 19 March 2000 (a sprightly 25) hails from the land of tartan, whisky and ‘that’ loch monster. A defender by both trade and inclination, Mayo has etched out a living primarily as a central defender for Kilmarnock, a sterling choice. Towering at 1.91m (6ft 3in) with a weight of 82kg (12st 12lb) - thank lordy it’s all muscle - he adorns the number 5 jersey. I daresay a bullseye choice.
Our lad Mayo joined Rangers as a trainee in the Premiership (Scotland, where else?) in July 2016. Spent some time, no doubt learning the grand art of hoofing the ball up the field and steadfastly refusing to allow the other team to score goals. Following this, he took a few loans here and there, like a nomad seeking wisdom from the four winds. He gallivanted off to Partick Thistle in January 2020, Dunfermline Athletic in September 2020, back to Partick Thistle in July 2021 (a bit like a homesick child, you might say), and finally to Kilmarnock in July 2022.
Not gloating but I'd be remiss to not highlight his personal best (to date, of course). I speak of his ongoing stint at Kilmarnock which kicked off (pun always intended) in the 2022 - 2023 season. 34 first team appearances, not too shabby for a debut season. But our man Mayo wasn't done yet. 2023 - 2024 saw him make 36 appearances and, hold onto your hats - he scored a goal! In the following season, he scoffed at his previous record and made 37 appearances. As of the current season 2025 - 2026, he's already had six outings.
In July 2023, Mayo decided (or someone decided for him), that enough was enough and officially transferred from Rangers to Kilmarnock for fee shrouded in more mystery than Loch Ness. Between you, me and the goalpost, he still gets about in the League Cup and Scottish Cup, with six and one starts respectively.
Like a fine scotch, or a recalcitrant striker, Lewis Mayo is maturing nicely. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
