The towering figure of Kristers Tobers has become a well-established sight on the football pitch. Born on 13th December 2000 in Latvia, this defensive juggernaut now applies his mountainous skills at the central back position for Aberdeen. Stretching to an imposing height of 6ft 2in (1.9m) and weighted solidly at 13st 3lb (84kg), Tobers dons the number 24 jersey for his club and has also brought his talents to the Latvia national team.
At present, Tobers' market value mirrors his stature on the playing field, estimated to be around £1m (according to Transfermarkt). His commitment to Aberdeen is set to remain strong for a while yet, with his contract binding him to the club until the end of June 2028.
Peeling back the layers of time to January 2020, we find Tobers making a loan move from Liepāja in the Virslīga of his home country to Lechia Gdansk in the Polish Ekstraklasa. Over the course of his stay in Poland, Tobers put in admirable performances, making a total of 65 first-team league appearances across four seasons. Following his loan spell, in July 2020 Tobers made the tie to Lechia Gdansk permanent, transferring for an undisclosed fee.
A turn of the calendar to July 2023 saw a fresh chapter in Tobers' career book. Exiting the Polish Ekstraklasa, he graced the verdant lawns of Switzerland's Super League as he transferred to the Grasshoppers. His tenure with the Swiss club was again marked by diligence, clocking up 39 first-team league appearances across two seasons, while netting the ball once.
The Scottish land beckoned Tobers in January 2025. While the bells of the New Year still rang, he transferred from the Grasshoppers to Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership for around £700k. In the current season, Tobers has further staked his place in the first team, having already made eight appearances in the leagues.
Moreover, Tobers' international performance illuminates his versatility. His contributions to the Scottish Cup, UEFA's European Qualifiers and the Nations League are noteworthy. He has represented Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup, starting in two fixtures. His performances with Latvia have also been commendable. He scored once in seven starts during the 2022-2024 Euro Qualifiers, and took the field in five starts and one substitute appearance in the 2024-2025 Nations League.
