Ah, the fascinating saga of Kieran Wright, born on a bitter January day back in 2000 in the bonnie land of Scotland. Currently holding the lofty position of goalkeeper for Rangers, one can see why he was destined for greatness from an early age. With a stature of 6ft 2in (or 1.89m for those who prefer some continental flair), and a weight of about 13st 3lb (or 84kg), it's clear he was built for the in-goal battles of the Scottish Premiership.
Donning the number 32 jersey, and worth a grand total of around £43k, as per the economical masterminds at Transfermarkt, Wright has been, and continues to be, the cornerstone of Rangers'... well, sideline.
In the summer of 2016, our young wunderkind joined Rangers as a trainee, and has since been on an extensive tour of Scotland's football landscape. It's as if they can't quite decide what to do with him. A loan to Albion Rovers in the Lowland League followed in January 2018, before switching to Raith Rovers in the Championship sextet in August of the same year. Not one to settle down, in January 2020 he found himself guarding the sticks for Alloa Athletic in League One on yet another loan spell. The very same club borrowed his services again come October 2021. We should highlight, however, a short, yet undoubtedly game-changing, stint with Partick Thistle in Championship before this second rendezvous with Alloa.
After a presumably thrilling loan period with Dumbarton in League Two in early 2022, Wright headed back to Rangers, the club clearly unable to resist the lure of his talents any longer. Despite this, he has yet to make a first team appearance in the current season. Would you believe it?
In May 2024, yet another loan spell. This time it was Livingston in the Premiership who drew the lucky straw. An intoxicating debut season saw Wright make a single first team appearance in league matches. Rangers, unable to cope without his magnetic appeal, immediately recalled him, and the saga was set to repeat itself in July 2024 - this time with Airdrieonians in the Championship. Sixteen first team appearances later and, you've guessed it, he's back at Rangers, once again warming that sideline in season 2025 - 2026 amid a whirlwind of no first team appearances in league matches.
So there you have it. The dizzying career trajectory of Kieran Wright, a player who's barely had time to unpack before he's headed off to his next temporary home. And yet, each loan informs us that he is very much in demand, a comforting thought as he continues to ply his trade in the luminous shadows of Scottish football, ever the stalwart sentinel of the touchline.
