Well, here we have it, the intricate tapestry of Kieran Dowell's career. Born on 10th October 1997, the lad hails from England and enjoys kicking a ball around the midfield, usually favouring the position of a central attacking midfielder. Currently plying his trade for Rangers, he stands tall at 6ft 1in (1.86m) and weighs in at a lean 11 stone (70kg). The number 20 jersey has been his preference for some time now, offering a small insight into his superstitious nature.
Kieran began his soccer journey, as in July 2014 he joined Everton as a trainee. More like chubby schoolboys being heckled by their PE teacher, rather than professionals in the esteemed Premier League. He made a grand total of, let's check, yes, two whole first team appearances in league matches in his debut season of 2015-2016.
Not content with warming the bench at Everton, Dowell switched Premier League locker rooms on loan to Nottingham Forest in August 2017, where he clocked in 38 appearances and scored a whopping nine goals - a veritable spree for the lad.
Now, apparently, preferable to being on the bench at a Premiership club, the lad opted for a loan to Sheffield United in the Championship in January 2019. With 16 appearances and netting two goals, this venture can't be dismissed outright as a complete waste of everybody's time.
Having journeyed to Derby County in July 2019 and then to Wigan Athletic the following January, still in the Championship, and making only 10 and 12 appearances respectively, one might judge Kieran's career arc as somewhat flat.
In July 2020, Norwich City fetched him from Everton for a fee of about an astonishing £2m (Did I mention money has no value these days?). Dowell appeared 66 times on the pitch and scored 11 goals across three seasons at Norwich City, not exactly big-time, but it helps keep the lights on.
Having cooled his heels in the Scottish Premiership with Rangers in July 2023, he graced the pitch just 36 times and scored four goals across three seasons. Not satisfied with his stints in Scotland, he took a quick detour to Birmingham City in January 2025 on loan, only to come crawling back to Rangers in June the same year. Should someone point out to the lad that stability is key, or are we content to watch this nomadic charade?
At the time of writing this, Dowell has staggered out onto the turf twice in the current 2025-2026 season. Whether he will contribute anything of note this season remains to be seen. He also just about got through the League Cup 2025-2026 for Rangers with one start and even managed to take part in the Champions League Qualifiers 2025-2026, with two starts and one appearance as a sub.
All in all, Kieran Dowell, a name that suggests more promise than it delivers. Here's to hoping he'll eventually find his feet, or perhaps a less punishing travelling schedule.
