John Souttar, that boy born in Scotland on 25th of September, 1996, stands at a mighty 6ft 2in (1.88m) and weighs 11st 11lb (75kg). He now kicks about with Rangers, primarily as a central defender, wearing the number 5 jersey. Oh, and he has represented Scotland, not that it's made a huge difference.
Starting his career as a mere whippersnapper in July 2012, Souttar donned Dundee United's threads as part of their Premiership squad in Scotland. His first season (2012-2013), saw him clamber onto the pitch... eight times. He must have been building suspense, as during the 2013-2014 season, Souttar made a dizzying 22 appearances and even managed to pot a goal. The following two seasons weren't much to write home about, as he only managed to get on the field for another 33 times combined.
Then, in February of 2016, Souttar took his talents to Hearts in a heart-wrenching transfer from Dundee United. The price: a whopping £150k. Not exactly breaking the bank, but nonetheless, Hearts were now his home. Souttar enjoyed more regular football at Hearts with 120 appearances and six goals over six seasons, becoming a strong presence on the backline for Hearts in the Premiership.
Keeping the trend of not-so-mind-blowing transfers, July 2022 saw Souttar up sticks again. This time, it was Rangers calling his name. He’s had decent success so far on the blue side of Glasgow, having made 61 appearances and netted four times to date.
Between 2024-2025, our boy John hustled quite a bit, appearing three times in the League Cup, once in the Scottish Cup, once in Euro Qualifiers, four times in the Europa League, twice in the Champions League Qualifiers, six times in the Nations League and, as a crowning glory, a whopping total of 10 times in the Europa League. I assume he had a nap after all that.
All this talk about Souttar starts and appearances could leave one mistaking him for a Celtic great, God forbid. Nonetheless, like a solid whisky, hopefully the lad will improve with age.
