Jim Goodwin, born on 20 November 1981 (age 44), was a Republic of Ireland midfielder who came through at Celtic before making his senior career elsewhere. He was part of the club’s system as a trainee, but his route to regular football took him away from Glasgow.
Goodwin left Celtic in May 2002 for Stockport County, and that move gave his career its first proper shape. His most productive league season came at Stockport in 2003–04, when he scored four goals in 34 appearances, a decent return for a player whose game was built more around midfield discipline than decoration.
After Stockport, he had spells with Scunthorpe United, Huddersfield Town, Hamilton Academical and Alloa Athletic before becoming more firmly established at St Mirren. There, primarily as a central defensive midfielder, he became a significant first-team figure rather than just another well-travelled name passing through.
Goodwin’s career began at Celtic, but it was shaped by the clubs that gave him regular senior football after he moved on. Stockport provided the early platform, and St Mirren became the main stage for his established years.
