Karlsson's career began in earnest in January 2016 when he joined Falkenbergs FF in the Swedish Superettan as a trainee. His debut season saw him make an impressive 26 first-team appearances and score seven goals. The following year, he transferred to IF Elfsborg in the Allsvenskan in Sweden for an undisclosed fee. Across his four seasons with Elfsborg, he made a total of 83 first team appearances, scoring consistently.
In September 2020, Karlsson made the move from Sweden to the Netherlands, transferring to AZ in the Eredivisie for a fee of approximately £2m. His record remained consistent, with a steady increase in goals scored over 89 first-team appearances in three seasons.
Karlsson's consistent performance caught the attention of Italian Serie A side Bologna, who acquired him in August 2023 for around £8m.
