James McGarry, born on 9 April 1998 and hailing from New Zealand, is a determined and skilled left back presently plying his trade for Aberdeen. Standing an impressive 5 ft 10 in (1.8m) and weighing 11 st 4lb (72 kg), the Kiwi international sports the number 15 jersey on the Pittodrie pitch.
With a market value estimated to be in the region of €300k, which is roughly £256k according to the most recent exchange rates, McGarry's worth has been rightly recognised. This information, as per Transfermarkt, suggests a player of some ability. Also worthy of note is the fact his contract with Aberdeen is due to expire imminently on 30 June 2025.
The beginning of McGarry's professional journey saw him join Wellington Phoenix in the A-League, Australia, in July 2015. Over the years he made 39 first team appearances in league matches for the club.
The touring Kiwi defender then went on to sign with Willem II in the Eredivisie, Netherlands, in July 2018. He made infrequent appearances during his time there, with a record of only six first team league matches under his belt.
In October 2020, McGarry returned to his old stomping ground, completing a move from Willem II back to Wellington Phoenix. During his second stint at the club, he made 37 first team appearances in league matches.
His tour of the A-League continued with a move to Newcastle United Jets, also in Australia, in July 2022, where he made ten first team appearances and bagged a goal in the process. His subsequent move to Central Coast Mariners in February 2023 was more fruitful with two goals in 11 appearances.
In August 2023, Scottish Premiership club Aberdeen secured his signature for an undisclosed fee and added a dash of Kiwi tenacity to their defensive line. He has made 20 first team appearances in league matches and has become a familiar figure at Pittodrie.
Intriguingly, Aberdeen loaned him out to Athenian outfit Athens Kallithea in the Greek Super League in January 2025. He has made eight first team appearances in the current league campaign for the Greek side.
Apart from his league journey, McGarry notably scored a goal in the League Cup 2024 - 2025 for Aberdeen from four appearances as a substitute, and made a start in the Conference League 2013 - 2014 while with the Scots, showcasing his versatility and commitment no matter the colour of the jersey he wears.
