Jack Hendry, born in Glasgow on 7 May 1995 (age 31), is a Scotland centre-half now with Al-Ettifaq. At 6ft 4in (1.94m), he has the frame for the job, though his career has rarely moved in a straight line.
Celtic signed him from Dundee in January 2018 for around £1.5m, taking a punt on a defender who had shown enough in Scotland to merit a closer look. It was not a move that settled into anything especially smooth. Hendry had the raw tools, but Celtic is not a place that waits patiently for centre-backs to learn in public.
Oostende became the important spell after that. In 2020-21 he made 27 league appearances and scored twice, his most productive league season, and Celtic sold him to the Belgian club in July 2021 for around £1.5m. That period did more to steady his career than his time in Glasgow had managed.
He later had spells with Club Brugge and Al-Ettifaq, and remains with the Saudi club, wearing squad number four. In 2026-27 he has made nine league appearances and scored once for Al-Ettifaq. He has also been involved with Scotland this season, with appearances across the World Cup, World Cup qualifying and Nations League.
Hendry’s career has taken him from Dundee to Celtic, then through Belgium and on to Saudi Arabia, with Scotland caps running alongside it. The Celtic spell was brief and uneven, but the years after it gave him a firmer professional footing.
