Jack Hendry, born in Glasgow on 7 May 1995 (age 31), is a Scotland centre-half now with Al-Ettifaq. A towering 6ft 4in (1.94m), he has generally been used as a central defender, where the attraction has always been obvious enough: size, reach and the capacity to carry himself in a back line.
Celtic signed him from Dundee in January 2018 for around £1.5m. It was a move that made sense on paper at the time, with Hendry still developing and coming from a Premiership environment, but his Celtic spell never settled into anything especially convincing.
Oostende became the more important staging post. His 2020-21 league season there was the most productive of his career, with two goals in 27 appearances, and Celtic later sold him to the Belgian club in July 2021 for around £1.5m. That period did more for his standing than his time in Glasgow had managed.
After Celtic, Hendry’s career moved through Belgium and on to Saudi Arabia, with spells involving Oostende, Club Brugge and Al-Ettifaq. In 2026-27 he has made six Pro League appearances for Al-Ettifaq, scoring once, and he remains in the Scotland picture, with three World Cup appearances and one World Cup qualifying appearance this season.
Hendry’s career has been one of stops and corrections rather than a straight climb. Celtic was a significant chapter, but his stronger footing came after leaving, particularly through his Belgian spells and his later move to Al-Ettifaq.
