Hyeok-kyu Kwon, born on the 13th of March 2001 in Korea Republic, is a professional footballer who makes his living playing predominantly as a central defensive midfielder. Currently rendering his services to Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership, Kwon is recognised by the number 18 on the back of his shirt. Standing at an imposing height of 6 feet 2 inches (1.9 metres), he cuts an imposing figure in midfield. Weighing in at 12 stone and 1 pound (77kg), his physique lends itself well for the physical demands of his role.
The player's market value hovers around the €750,000 mark, converting to roughly £645,000 when assessed in terms of British currency, as recorded by Transfermarkt. His current contract with Hibernian is due to conclude on the 31st of May, 2025, with the last three months fast approaching.
In his infancy as a professional, Kwon marked his arrival in senior professional football by joining Busan I'Park, who compete in Korea's K League 2, in January 2019. Over a span of four seasons —with some on loan—, Kwon made a total of 43 appearances for the club in league matches, supplementing these performances with three goals.
His impressive displays in his home country earned him a loan move to Gimcheon Sangmu based in K League 1, Korea's top footballing division. There, he would go on to make 33 appearances across two seasons before he returned to Busan I'Park following the completion of his loan tenure in September 2022.
Due to his escalating reputation, Kwon was acquired by Celtic FC in July 2023 for the sum of £860,000. His time at the Glasgow giants experienced a hiccup when he was sent on loan to fellow Premiership side St Mirren halfway through his first season. At St Mirren, he featured in eight league matches before he was recalled back to Celtic at the end of the 2023-2024 campaign.
In an unexpected turn of events, Kwon switched allegiance to Hibernian on loan just a couple of months after returning to Celtic, in August 2024. At present, during the 2024-2025 season, Kwon has made 21 appearances for Hibernian in league encounters. Additionally, he has also made one start in the Scottish Cup with Hibs this term.
Despite these movements and the seemingly nomadic nature of his career in recent years, Kwon's ability and contribution cannot be understated. His potential, demonstrated through his performances on the pitch, is a cause for excitement among supporters at Easter Road.
