In January 2017, he returned to Aston Villa completing his loan term at Stevenage. Again, in January of the following year 2018, he was loaned out, this time to Crewe Alexandra, in the League Two. McKirdy returned to Aston Villa in July 2018, after serving his loan term with Crewe Alexandra. Yet another loan awaited him in January 2019, where he was sent off to Newport County. Then, in July of 2019, he left Aston Villa for a transfer to Carlisle United.
McKirdy moved to another League Two club, Port Vale, from Carlisle United in September 2020. Following a year there, he transferred to Swindon Town, again a member of the League Two, in August 2021. In September 2022, he made a notable upshift in his career leaving League Two's Swindon Town for Scotland's Premiership participant, Hibernian, for an undisclosed fee. However, in February 2024, McKirdy returned back to Swindon Town on loan from Hibernian but came back to Hibernian in June 2024 once his loan at Swindon ended.
Lending his services to Hibernian, McKirdy appeared in the domestic cup competitions, starting a match in the League Cup 2024 - 2025 and coming off the bench in the Scottish Cup 2023 - 2024.
