Grant Hanley, a stout Scottish defender primarily known for his role as a central defender, was born on the 20th of November 1991. Standing at an imposing 6ft 1in (1.87m) and weighing in at 12st 10lb (81kg), Hanley is currently the stable shield at the back for Hibernian, wearing their number 4 jersey. Furthermore, he has received call-ups to represent Scotland on the international stage.
As of current reports, his market value is estimated to be around £500k, according to Transfermarkt.
Initially, Hanley cut his teeth at Blackburn Rovers, where he began as a trainee in July 2008. He gradually worked his way up through the ranks, making his first-team debut in the 2009-2010 season with a single appearance. Over the years, he became an increasing presence on the pitch; in the 2012-2013 season, he made 39 league appearances and netted two goals. He continued to figure prominently up until the 2015-2016 season, where Hanley appeared 44 times, scoring twice.
In July 2016, cashing in on his rather robust reputation at Blackburn, he transferred to Premier League side, Newcastle United, for a tidy sum of around £6m. His tenure at Newcastle was short and fairly uneventful, featuring in 10 matches and scoring one goal in the 2016-2017 season.
Hanley then shifted base from Newcastle to Norwich City in the Championship in August 2017 with a transfer fee of around £3.5m. Evidently a key part of their plan, Hanley was a visible presence in the team, making 32 appearances and scoring one goal in his first season. However, his subsequent seasons were mixed with highs and lows in terms of appearances and goal scoring. Despite this, he spent a significant period of his career with Norwich City from 2017 to 2025.
After a stint at Birmingham City which began in January 2025, Hanley returned to Scotland. He transferred to Hibernian, notably the Premiership in Scotland, in August 2025. In the current 2025-2026 season, he has made two first team appearances.
Beyond his club duties, Hanley also displayed commitment to his country, Scotland. His appearances include starts in the League Cup 2025-2026 for Hibernian, World Cup Qualifiers Europe 2024-2026, the Euro 2024, and Euro Qualifiers 2022-2024, in addition to eight starts in the Nations League 2024-2025.
