Gijs Smal, born on the 31st of August 1997, is a Dutch football professional renowned for his defensive skills as a left back. Currently, at the age of 28, he graces the pitch for Feyenoord and is recognised by his number 5 jersey. Smal stands at approximately 6ft (1.83m) and tips the scales at 12st 1lb (77kg).

Smal began his professional career with FC Volendam in the Eredivisie in the Netherlands back in July 2017. During his debut season (2017-2018), he appeared 28 times for the first team and managed to score three goals in league matches. In the following season (2018-2019), he took part in 12 league matches, showcasing his persistence and dedication. During the 2019-2020 season, his performance improved significantly, with 28 first team appearances and an impressive six goals.
After three seasons at FC Volendam, Smal transferred to FC Twente, also in the Eredivisie, in July 2020. Throughout the 2020-2021 season, he played in 22 league matches. This was followed by appearances in 25 matches during the 2021-2022 season, where he also scored two goals. His contribution continued steadily through the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 seasons, with 34 and 26 appearances respectively, and a goal tally of another two for each.
In July 2024, Smal made another move, this time to Feyenoord in the Eredivisie. During the 2024-2025 season, he made 25 appearances in the league and a further ten in the current 2025-2026 season.
Smal also gained valuable experience on the European stage during the Europa League 2025-2026, supporting Feyenoord with his five starts.
