Emmanuel Fernandez, an English born product of a disastrous year that featured the likes of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and, heaven forfend, the introduction of Windows XP, finds himself in the cold harsh reality of the 2021 football scene. With a birth date of 20th November 2001, this puts our young friend firmly in the 'age 24' category. The lad has done well for himself, blossoming into a strapping defender of 6ft 4in (1.94m), weighing in at a respectable 13st 3lb (84kg). He's seen strutting around in the number 37 jersey for Rangers - a number that could easily be mistaken for his coffee order in a swanky café rather than the proud display of sporting prowess.
According to Transfermarkt (Isn't it terrific how everything is valued nowadays?), Fernandez is currently worth a humble £1.5m. One does wonder about the going rate for football defenders these days.
Let me take you back to a point in history. The year 2021, when our Emmanuel found his way from the quaint little Ramsgate, immersed in the Lower Leagues, to the bustling town of Peterborough United in League One. Following an exhilarating debut season that comprised of an audacious single appearance in league matches, the lad found himself seeking greener pastures on loan at Barnet within the illustrious League Two, all before fluttering back to The Posh (Peterborough) like a homing pigeon.
In a likely bout of déjà vu, our hero once again graced the pitch for his debut season, this time at Peterborough, where he repeated his earlier feat of a staggering single appearance in league matches.
Then, as if by divine decree, or perhaps just human capriciousness one fine July 2025, Fernandez found himself journeying up north to Rangers in the Scottish Premiership, for a fee shrouded in mystery and intrigue. Here, our Fernandez seems to have found his rhythm, donning the Rangers jersey seven times in the 2025-2026 season and even managing to boot the ball into the back of the net twice in league matches.
He's also had his name whispered in the erstwhile hallowed arenas of the League Cup (where he has to his name, a goal in a single start) and the illustrious European battlefield of the Europa League, where he's managed a couple of starts.
As this takes us up to the current season, there are undoubtedly more pages to fill in this young lad's sporting journey. Unfortunately, they involve typing and that's enough work for one day. So here it ends, for now...
