Dayot Upamecano, born 27 October 1998 (age 27), is a French central defender with Bayern Munich, where he wears squad number 2. He is not a novelty act or a future-project centre-half now – he remains a regular first-team presence in 2025–26.
His earlier Bundesliga work with RB Leipzig gave the clearest early view of his range. The 2017–18 league season was his most productive in front of goal, with three goals in 28 appearances, a useful return for a defender whose main value has always been in the less decorative parts of the job.
At Bayern, Upamecano has continued to carry a heavy workload. In 2025–26 he has made 24 Bundesliga appearances, scoring once, along with one DFL-Supercup outing and 12 Champions League appearances, including one goal. Across all competitions for Bayern this season, he has made 37 appearances and scored twice.
He has also been involved internationally with France, making one World Cup appearance and five in European qualifying, while his club season has included five Club World Cup appearances. His current market value is around £42.5m, according to Transfermarkt.
Upamecano’s career has moved from RB Leipzig promise to established Bayern responsibility, with his current role still very much that of a first-team defender rather than a squad option.
