Earlier in his career, Main joined Darlington in England's National League North as a trainee in July 2007. During his spell at Darlington starting from the 2007 season through to the 2010 season, Main made 61 first team league match appearances, netting a total of five goals.

His years at Middlesbrough from the 2011 to the 2013 season proved fortunate as he brought his tally of first team league appearances to 48, with an added count of six goals to his name. After a decent although not prolific run with Portsmouth, Main moved north of the border to Scotland, joining Motherwell in the Premiership in January 2018.
Two seasons at Motherwell saw Main make 47 appearances, where he scored eight goals. A switch of clubs within the Premiership then saw Main move to Aberdeen in July 2019, where he played for the next two seasons until February 2021. Following a second spell at League One's Shrewsbury Town, Main signed for St Mirren in July 2021, where he significantly improved his goal tally, making 68 appearances and scoring 11 goals over 2 seasons.
After a brief stint in India with I-League's Bengaluru, Main returned to the Scottish Premiership with Dundee in January 2024. His performance for the current season 2024 - 2025 shows 14 first team appearances with two goals to his credit. The League Cup 2024 - 2025 saw him make a remarkable contribution of four goals for Dundee in three starts and three substitute appearances.
