Born amid the federations and fireworks of July 4th, 1995, Charlie Telfer has had none of the independence usually associated with the date. The Scottish-born wanderer, set out as a midfielder, has spent time at no less than nine clubs in his short career, traipsing his way through Scotland's Premiership and Championship - though trouble me if any silverware has adorned his mantlepiece.
Standing not so tall at 5ft 8in (1.75m) and tipping the scales at 11st 9lb (74kg), Telfer currently dons the number 25 jersey for Scotland's second-rate Championship side, Hamilton Academical. His market value, a rather underwhelming £130k according to Transfermarkt, is perhaps indicative of his acrobatic stint through the lower echelons of the footballing world. Telfer’s contract with Hamilton is set to expire on 31st May 2025, leaving him in a precarious position indeed.
After joining Rangers in July 2012, Telfer graced the pitch merely once in the entirety of the 2013 - 2014 season. His career in the Premiership appeared to brighten in July 2014 when he transferred to Dundee United for a fee of £200k, managing 21 appearances and netting four goals in his debut season. However, his moment in the spotlight was short-lived, dipping to just seven appearances the following season, and despite a loan transfer to Livingston in January 2016, Telfer's star was clearly on the wane.
Quiver in anticipation, our hero then packed his bags for the Netherlands, joining Almere City in the 2017-2018 season. The Dutch, it seems, shared few affections with Telfer, resulting in a scant 8 appearances - Scotland must have been missing him dearly. With this in mind, Telfer boarded a flight and was soon lacing up his boots for Greenock Morton in July 2018. A short spell at Morton was followed by stints at Falkirk and the unpronounceable Airdrieonians, where Telfer managed a total of 52 appearances and bagged a modest five goals over two seasons.
The joyride continued in July 2024 when Ross County took their turn spinning the hamster wheel, hoping to extract some raw, untapped talent from Telfer - with limited success, of course. In February 2025, he transferred to Hamilton Academical on loan, making nine appearances thus far. Spare a thought for the collector of clubs for nine is a charm indeed.
