Charlie Mulgrew was born on 6 March 1986 in Scotland and became a solid defender, particularly known for his work as a central defender. Standing 6ft 2in (1.9m) tall and weighing in at 13st (83kg), he made a formidable physical presence on the pitch.
Mulgrew began his professional career as a trainee at Celtic in July 2002. Over multiple seasons from 2010 to 2016, he quickly cemented his place in the Celtic first team, making meaningful contributions both defensively and offensively as evidenced by his match appearances and goal contributions. These included seasons where he made over two dozen first team appearances and seasons in which he regularly found the back of the net, such as 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 where he scored eight and five goals respectively.
Mulgrew spent a short while at Dundee United in the Premiership on loan in January 2006, where he impressed with goal contributions in both his debut season and later during his tenure from 2021 to 2023. After his time at Dundee United, Mulgrew made a brief stop at Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2006, where he made a handful of first team appearances, a pattern that would continue during his loan at Southend United in 2008.
A notable shift in Mulgrew's career occurred with his transfer to Aberdeen in July 2008. Here, he enjoyed considerable playing time, making over three dozen appearances in some seasons, and contributing to the team's offense with notable goal tallies.
Returning to Celtic in July 2010, Mulgrew once again donned the green and white, turning out consistently for the team and additionally providing an offensive thrust with regular goal contributions.
August 2016 saw Mulgrew cross the border to England, where he joined Blackburn Rovers. While at Blackburn, he once again proved his goal-scoring ability from defence, particularly notable in the 2017 - 2018 and 2018 - 2019 seasons where he scored 11 and 10 goals respectively. During his tenure with Blackburn, he spent a short loan period at Wigan Athletic, and upon his return to Blackburn, he was once again a regular feature in the starting lineup.
A brief loan spell at Fleetwood Town occurred in October 2020, and by July 2021, Mulgrew found himself back in Scotland with Dundee United, where he sustained his impressive appearance and goal records. As of August 2023, Mulgrew was transferred from Dundee United, with the expectation of continuing to impress at his new, as of yet unnamed, club.
