Atanas Chernev, born 25 March 2002 (age 24), is a Bulgarian central defender whose career has been shaped far more by Botev Plovdiv than by any other stop so far. A commanding 6ft 3in (1.91m) centre-half, he is valued at around £425,000 by Transfermarkt.
The early loan spells gave him the usual hard education away from home, but Botev was where he properly settled. Across five seasons there he made 54 league appearances and scored two league goals, with 2023-24 his most productive league campaign: 20 appearances and one goal. For a developing defender, that was the spell that gave his career its shape rather than just its minutes.
His 2025-26 season has been a busier, less settled one. He made 15 league appearances for Estrela Amadora, then seven for Kaiserslautern, before returning to Estrela and adding another 15 league appearances. Chernev remains a Bulgarian defender with his main body of work still attached to Botev Plovdiv, while his more recent career has been about trying to establish the same continuity elsewhere.
