Adam Montgomery, born 18 July 2002 in Scotland, stands at a height of 5ft 8in (1.73m) and tips the scales at 9st 6lb (60kg). The native Scot is a robust defender who more often than not operates at left back for his current club Celtic. He dons the number 37 shirt for both club and country with a quiet assurance that belies his comparatively youthful age of 23.
In July 2009, our young hero, Montgomery, came to Celtic as a green-as-grass trainee. He made his first team debut in the hallowed green and white colours during the 2020-2021 season. In that rookie year, he made two first team appearances each time taking to the field with a veritable mix of trepidation and elation. Striding forward into the following 2021-2022 season, Montgomery upped his tally, making eight first team appearances.
In a surprising move, January 2022 saw Montgomery temporarily switch allegiances. He moved on loan from Celtic to fellow Premiership Scottish team Aberdeen. He clocked up a respectable number of seven appearances during his brief spell with Aberdeen.
Montgomery's stint up in Aberdeen was short-lived, and by June the same year, he was back home under the glistening floodlights at Celtic Park. He continued to notch up appearances, totalling another eight matches during the subsequent 2021-2022 season. As we sit halfway through the 2025-2026 season, Celtic's prodigal son has yet to make an appearance for the first team this year.
Montgomery's services were requested by St Johnstone in July 2022, and he headed off on another season-long loan. This temporary detour to the Championship proved a busy time for our versatile defender, who played an impressive 28 league matches. Successful though it was, like all good things, this loan spell came to an end in June 2023.
Fleetwood Town saw his potential, and Montgomery found himself strutting his stuff in the English League Two from July 2023. Yet, as we are seeing a pattern emerge here, it was not long-lived, with the Scottish lad returning from his English excursion to Celtic by January 2024.
Montgomery's services were immediately drafted by Motherwell, resulting in another brief loan spell in the Premiership. A month later, he returned to Celtic, still in the same 2024 season. Subsequent ventures included a trip to Queen's Park where he netted once and donned their colours in 12 league matches, and a loan spell at Livingston where, at present, in the 2025-2026 season, he has made eight appearances.
A defender by trade, journeyman by circumstance, loyalty by choice - that's Adam Montgomery for you. Whether adorned in the hallowed green and white, or in the colours of his various loan beneficiaries, one thing remains certain: Montgomery is a talent to watch for the rest of this season and beyond.
